Dr. Atif Mian Asked To Step Down From EAC: Faisal Javed

Islamabad (September 07, 2018): Federal Government has asked Dr Atif Mian, who had been appointed to the Economic Advisory Council (EAC), to step down.

“Atif Mian was asked to step down from the Advisory Council and he has agreed,” PTI Senator Faisal Javed tweeted on Friday morning.

“A replacement would be announced later,” he said.Earlier on September 04, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry while addressing the criticism had said Pakistan belongs to minorities as much as it belongs to others.

“What should we do with the minorities in the country?” he had asked. “Should we throw them out?”

The information minister had also questioned, “What is wrong with the appointment of him as a member of the EAC? “This is the person everyone is saying will be the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in the next five years. Why should we not appoint him?” he added.

“It is not like we have appointed him as a member of the Islamic Council,” the information further said.

The notification stated the EAC will comprise 18 members of which seven belong to the government sector while the remaining 11 belong to the private sector.

Earlier, the opposition parties tabled call attention notice in Senate over the appointment of Mian Atif.

The government was asked to clarify its position over the appointment of Mian Atif in the house.

On September 01, to boost economic Prime Minister Imran Khan reconstituted the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) as notification was also issued in this connection.

The notification stated the EAC will comprise 18 members of which seven belong to the government sector while the remaining 11 belong to the private sector.

Those belonging to the private sector include experts from Pakistan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

  • Dr Ashfaque Hassan Khan, Principal and Dean, School of Social Sciences & Humanities, National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST).

  • Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director, Sustainable Member Development Policy Institute (SDPI).
  • Dr Asad Zaman, Vice Chancellor of the Pakistan Institute Member of Development Economics.
  • Dr Naved Hamid, Professor of Economics at the Lahore Member School of Economics.
  • Syed Salim Raza, Former Governor of State Bank of Member Pakistan.
  • Mr Sakib Sherani, Economist.
  • Dr Atif R.Mian, Princeton University (Department of Member Economics and Woodrow Wilson School of Public Policy).
  • Dr Asim ljaz Khawaja, Sumitomo — FASID Professor of Member International Finance and Development at the Harvard Kennedy School.
