Fuel price hike chanllenged in Islamabad Federal Court

ISLAMABAD: A fresh surge in petroleum prices, including petrol, has been legally challenged in the Federal Constitutional Court.

The petition lists the Government of Pakistan and the Secretary of the Establishment Division as respondents. It asks the court to instruct the authorities to cap petrol and diesel prices at Rs 200 per litre.

Additionally, the petitioner has urged the court to direct the government to explore importing petroleum products from Iran and to seek concessional fuel arrangements with Gulf countries.

The plea argues that in a country facing economic hardship, fuel prices nearing Rs 400 per litre are unreasonable. It further claims that factors such as global conflicts, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, and commitments to the International Monetary Fund are being cited as justifications for repeated price increases.

According to the petition, rising fuel costs are placing a heavy burden on ordinary citizens and disrupting daily life.

Meanwhile, on Thursday night, the government announced another hike in petroleum prices. Petrol was increased by Rs 6.51 per litre, while diesel saw a larger jump of Rs 19.39 per litre, intensifying pressure on transport and industrial sectors.
