KARACHI: Over the past 24 hours, severe weather conditions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have resulted in at least seven deaths and 33 injuries due to heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning strikes across various districts. Meanwhile, a heatwave warning has been issued for Karachi as temperatures are expected to soar.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), powerful windstorms and heavy rainfall caused the collapse of roofs and walls, tragically claiming the lives of an entire family, which included two children, four adult men, and one woman.
In addition to the fatalities, 33 individuals sustained injuries in different incidents. All injured persons, including 14 children, 12 women, and 7 men, were rushed to nearby medical facilities where they are receiving treatment.
Meteorological experts and the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) have issued alerts for the possibility of flash floods in the upper regions of KP. They also warned of the potential for glacial lake outbursts due to rising temperatures and intense rainfall.
The PMD has advised local authorities to stay vigilant and has urged residents to keep away from rivers and streams to prevent accidents.
Meanwhile, Karachi is experiencing persistent hot and humid weather, with temperatures expected to reach up to 36°C over the next 24 hours. Officials have also warned about occasional gusty winds during daytime hours.
Health professionals and meteorologists advise Karachi residents to minimize unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight and to increase water consumption to stay safe amid the ongoing heat and humidity.
