High Treason Case Hearing Against Musharraf Today

Islamabad (August 20, 2018): A three-judge special bench formed to try former military ruler Pervez Musharraf on charges of high treason is set to resume hearing into the case today.

The bench headed by Lahore High Court Chief Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali and comprised of Justice Tahira Safdar of the Balochistan High Court and Justice Nazar Akbar of the Sindh High Court will take up the case in the federal capital.

The court registrar intimated all parties involved in the case about the scheduled hearing.

Mohammad Akram Sheikh, who headed the prosecution team, tendered his resignation. In his resignation letter, the senior advocate expressed his inability to pursue the case after the likely change of the government in Islamabad.Prosecutor In Musharraf Treason Case ResignsThe former Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) government had appointed Akram Sheikh as head of the prosecution in the case in November 2013.

Earlier on June 14, a two-member bench has been constituted to hear Pervez Musharraf Treason Case. Chief Justice Lahore High Court Justice Yawar Ali will be heading the bench.

The Ministry of Law and Justice issued the notification to form the special bench to hear the case.

According to the notification, a two member bench headed by Lahore High Court Chief Justice will hear the case against former army ruler.

Earlier on April 07, the Chief Justice of Pakistan has approved the appointment of a judge Justice Yawar Ali in the special bench hearing treason case against General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, filling in space which became vacant after Justice Yahya Afridi who rescued himself from the bench.

The judge rescued himself from the case on the objection raised by the counsel of the Pervez Musharaf citing his bias towards the accused. Although the judge rejected the claims made by the counsel but rescued himself from the case, ultimately dissolving the bench.Now after induction of Justice Yawar in the special bench, three-member bench is now completed with two other judges Justice Tahira Safdar and Justice Nazar Akber and could resume its hearings into the case.

A notification from the law and justice department would also be issued soon in order to allow the bench to resume its hearing into the case which was halted after the dissolution of  bench.
