Iran calls on UN to denounce US seizure of cargo vessel

TEHRAN: Iran has urged the United Nations to formally condemn the United States after its navy seized an Iranian cargo ship, describing the move as “piracy” and a violation of a recently agreed ceasefire.

According to Iranian officials, the vessel identified as the Touska was intercepted in the Sea of Oman. Tehran strongly criticized the action, warning it could escalate tensions and threaten the safety of key maritime routes.

In a letter to the UN Security Council and Secretary-General, Iran’s ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, said the incident represents a serious breach of international law. He argued that the seizure undermines the ceasefire reached on April 8, 2026, and should be considered an act of aggression under the UN Charter.

Iran has called for the immediate release of the ship and is pressing the UN to take a clear stance against the action.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump defended the operation, stating that the Iran-flagged vessel was subject to US sanctions. He claimed the ship was taken after failing to comply with orders to halt, adding that US forces used force to disable it before taking control.

Trump also indicated that while the ceasefire would be extended to allow room for negotiations, Washington would continue enforcing a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports.
