WEB DESK: Israeli Supreme Court has suspended Prime Minister Netanyahu’s order to dismiss Ronen Bar, the head of the internal security agency.
According to media, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu had removed Ronen Bar from his position as the head of the internal security agency. In response to this decision, the Israeli opposition and an NGO filed a petition in the Supreme Court, which led the court to issue an interim ruling.
The court suspended Netanyahu’s order to remove Ronen Bar until the next hearing and instructed that the case be presented before a larger panel on April 8.
Following the court’s ruling, Netanyahu faced embarrassment, and the Attorney General wrote a letter to the Prime Minister, stating that Ronen Bar could not be removed, no interviews could be conducted for potential candidates, and a temporary appointment for the Shin Bet chief could not take place.
With the court’s decision, there is potential for a clash between the Israeli government and judiciary. Netanyahu has also responded, stating that the government appoints the Shin Bet chief and that there is no possibility of a civil war in Israel.
It is important to note that Prime Minister Netanyahu cited increasing distrust between him and Ronen Bar as the reason for the dismissal, while Ronen Bar labeled the decision as political. He claimed that Netanyahu wanted to avoid an investigation into the failure to prevent the October 7 attacks.
