Microsoft to shut down Skype on May 5, 2025, After Two Decades of Service

WEB DESK:  Microsoft has announced that it will officially retire Skype on May 5, 2025, marking the end of an era for one of the world’s pioneering video calling and communication platforms.

As per detail, After 20 years of service, Skype will be phased out as part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to streamline and unify its communication offerings.

As part of the transition, Microsoft is encouraging all Skype users to shift to Microsoft Teams, which will offer a seamless communication experience. Teams retains many of Skype’s core features—including video calling, chat, and contact management—while also providing enhanced collaboration tools designed for both personal and professional use.

To ensure a smooth migration, Microsoft has confirmed that chat histories and contacts will be preserved, allowing users to pick up right where they left off in the new platform.

While the purchase of Skype Credit has been discontinued, existing Skype services will remain functional until the end of users’ current billing cycles.

This move reflects Microsoft’s continued evolution in the digital communication space, aiming to provide a more integrated, secure, and future-ready environment through Microsoft Teams. “Skype helped shape the way the world communicates. As we look forward, Microsoft Teams is the platform that will carry that legacy forward—with even greater capabilities,” said a Microsoft spokesperson
