Opposition boycotts NA session against legislation thru ordinance  

 

Opposition parties on Wednesday boycotted National Assembly’s session in protest against government’s move to lay Tax Laws (Amendment) Ordinance, 2016 in the National Assembly, saying that when the Assembly is in session, ordinance could not be promulgated.

The National Assembly met here with Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in the chair.

During the session, Parliamentary Secretary for Finance Rana Muhammad Afzal Khan laid before the House  Tax Laws (Amendment) Ordinance, 2016. Opposition parties strongly reacted to the government’s move of legislation through ordinance . The opposition lawmakers said that legislation was Parliament’s right and government was making mockery of Parliament by heavily relying on ordinances for for legislation.

PPP lawmaker Naveed Qamar said that the government had made parliament a ‘laughing stock’, saying that Assembly is in session despite that the government was promulgating ordinances.

Former Speaker MNA Fehmida Mirza said that strengthening Parliament was responsibility of all of them. He deplored that the Women Parliamentary Caucus had become dysfunctional.  MQM’s Rashid Godail called for across the board accountability of all thieves.

Earlier, the House adopted a unanimous resolution condemning execution of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders in Bangladesh. Later, the house was adjourned till Thursday.
