ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Office has confirmed that discussions with the Afghan Taliban are taking place in Istanbul, urging both the public and media to disregard unverified claims circulating on social platforms.
During a media briefing on Friday, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andarabi reiterated Pakistan’s firm stance that Afghan territory must not be used as a base for terrorism against any nation. He mentioned that Islamabad has presented mediators with evidence-backed demands, which are being systematically deliberated with Taliban representatives.
Andarabi highlighted that the mediators have strongly supported Pakistan’s position, describing the ongoing dialogue process as constructive. He refuted speculative claims spreading online about the discussions.
Highlighting broader foreign policy objectives, Andarabi stated that Pakistan will not tolerate any breaches of the Indus Waters Treaty, underscoring water security as crucial to the country’s survival. He also condemned Israel’s continued violations of the Gaza ceasefire and reinforced Pakistan’s support for the Gaza Peace Initiative aimed at fostering long-term regional stability.
The spokesperson also pointed out the persistent suffering of the people in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir due to Indian state-sponsored terrorism. He noted that President Asif Ali Zardari addressed the Doha Conference, reaffirming Pakistan’s position on Kashmir and engaging with several global leaders on the matter.
Additionally, Andarabi mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is currently on an official visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the fifth anniversary of the country’s Victory Day in Baku. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar recently visited Istanbul on November 3, addressing various bilateral and regional issues amid the ongoing dialogue with the Afghan Taliban.
