LAHORE: The observance of the 9th Muharram across Pakistan is underway with profound religious significance and solemnity, honoring the martyrs of Karbala. Mourning processions are taking place in multiple cities, with extensive security measures in place to ensure safety.
In Lahore, the central procession commenced from Pandu Street in Islampura, passing through key areas including Islampura Bazaar, the Secretariat, and Old Anarkali, before culminating at Khema Sadat. Participants engaged in noha recitation, and prayers including Zohr and Maghrib are being offered along the route.
Security has been intensified, with over 10,000 personnel comprising police, Rangers, and other forces deployed to oversee 79 processions. Security infrastructure such as walk-through gates, metal detectors, surveillance cameras, and sniper positions have been established along the routes to maintain order.
In Karachi, the main procession set out from Nishtar Park and will conclude at the Hussainia Iranian Imambargah. Strict security protocols include sealing shops and closing roads with containers around key areas like MA Jinnah Road, Saddar, Empress Market, and Kharadar. Mobile services have been temporarily suspended along the procession routes to prevent any security threats. Heavy police presence, bomb disposal units, and Rangers are on high alert, similar to arrangements during yesterday’s 8th Muharram procession.
In Sukkur, a historic procession dating back over 500 years began in Rohri and will end on the eve of Ashura. Due to the procession, internet services in certain areas have been temporarily disrupted.
Other cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, and Dera Ismail Khan, also observed mourning rituals featuring noha recitation and self-flagellation. In Multan, a traditional procession of alam and tazia started from Imam Bargah Mumtazabad, while in Faisalabad, the main procession will commence tonight at 9 PM from Imam Bargah Haidariyah in Aminpur Bazaar.
