Islamabad(July 4, 2017): Elections 2018 likely to be held on the bases of previous delimitation of electoral constituencies as Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) failed to share population census data with the Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) so far.
With the population census data still being compiled, the electoral authorities are finding it difficult to carry out fresh delimitation of constituencies well in time for the next general election which is due sometime in August 2018.
For reshaping the boundaries, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) needs final census data as well as digital maps along with the description of areas and clearly-marked boundaries of the national and provincial assemblies’ constituencies.
It will take the ECP six to seven months to complete the delimitation process; and under its newly-proposed law, the exercise has to be completed at least six months before the next election.
ECP convened an important meeting this week to review the current situation.
