Lahore (August 10, 2018): The plea seeking halt of convictions of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Safdar and Muhammad Safdar filed in Lahore High Court on Friday in Avenfield case on the basis that the NAB law lapsed and the conviction under it was not sustainable in the eye of law.
The petitioner also raised objections over the appointment of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman. The application was filed by local lawyer Shahid Chuhan through Amir Zaheer Advocate.
Advocate Amir Zaheer in his main petition had questioned the NAB Ordinance 1999 and functioning of the courts under the law. He said the NAB court which convicted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had no jurisdiction to decide the matter as the law under which it had been functioning had lapsed long ago. He pleaded the high court to suspend the operation of the accountability court’s decision as the court had been functioning under a non-extent law.
He also has the view that NAB was harassing people using the NAB ordinance for their trial.
He requested the court to issue stay order against cases and inquiries under trial in NAB as he also requested to stop NAB inquiry against Shehbaz Sharif. 
Earlier today, Former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Captain Retired Safdar have submitted various pleas in Islamabad High Court for the amendment in already under trial pleas against Avenfiled Reference Conviction.
Court has been pleaded to make NAB and Accountability Court as a party in the case.
Earlier on Thursday, the NAB Court ordered the concerned authorities to produce former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday.
The orders were passed by the Judge of NAB Court II, Muhammad Arshad Malik during the hearing of references related to Al Azizia and Flagship Investment.
On July 16, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz, and son-in-law retired Captain Mohammad Safdar challenged their convictions by an accountability court in the Avenfield corruption reference in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The court on July 6 had sentenced Nawaz to 10 years in prison for owning assets beyond known income, along with a fine of £8 million. Maryam was given seven years of jail time and slapped with a fine of £2 million, as the court found her guilty of being “instrumental in concealment of the properties of her father”. Capt Safdar was handed one year in jail for failure to cooperate with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), and for aiding and abetting Nawaz and Maryam.
