ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially launched the Indus Robotics and Autonomous Systems Expo 2026 during an opening ceremony in Islamabad. In his address, he emphasized that the event demonstrates Pakistan’s resolve to become a prominent player in emerging global technologies shaping the 21st century.
The Prime Minister highlighted how robotics and autonomous systems are revolutionizing vital sectors, especially agriculture, by enabling farmers to detect crop stress, optimize water, fertilizer, and pesticide use, and adapt more effectively to climate challenges. He also pointed out the crucial role these technologies can play in disaster management, enhancing access to affected areas and supporting relief activities.
Shehbaz Sharif praised Pakistan’s advancements in indigenous technological development, noting significant progress in autonomous systems for defense and security. Under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, the armed forces have adopted state-of-the-art technologies developed domestically.
He mentioned that Pakistan now manufactures several high-tech simulators entirely within the country and that over sixty percent of drones used are indigenously produced. The Prime Minister commended scientists, engineers, technocrats, and professionals for their contributions toward strengthening Pakistan’s technological landscape.
Referring to the successful deployment of autonomous systems in the Marka-e-Haq operation, he highlighted Pakistan’s effective use of advanced technology to protect its borders and cyber frontiers.
He urged universities, research institutions, startups, industry players, and farmers to collaborate in creating a robust national innovation ecosystem. Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the knowledge and technologies developed locally should remain fully owned by Pakistan and continually upgraded.
Calling for inclusive growth, he stressed that the robotics and autonomous systems revolution must benefit farmers, small entrepreneurs, women, youth, and marginalized communities across the country. He also underscored the importance of establishing clear regulations and ethical standards to ensure these systems are safe, transparent, and used solely for humanity’s benefit.
To further promote innovation, the Prime Minister announced two key initiatives: the Spark and Elevate Program, aimed at turning research into competitive technologies and enterprises, and the Pakistan Venture Fund, with an initial $20 million commitment to boost investment in the country’s tech sector.
