Punjab Assembly Meets To Elect Speaker, Dy. Speaker

Lahore (August 16, 2018): Punjab Assembly’s session resumed under the chair of outgoing speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal for the election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the Punjab Assembly on Thursday.

Two more MPAs-elect, Malik Muhammad Waheed and Muhammad Khan Leghari, were administered oath taking the total number of members to 355. However; four MPAs are still to be sworn in.

The speaker showed the balloting place to the members and switched off the CCTV cameras installed there.

For speaker’s seat, the contest will be between PML-N’s Chaudhry Iqbal Gujjar and PTI’s Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi.For the slot of deputy speaker, PTI’s has fielded Dost Muhammad Mazari while PML-N’s candidate is former MPA Malik Waris Kallu.Earlier on Wednesday, as many as 360 Punjab Assembly newly elected members were administered oath by outgoing speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal during the first session of the assembly.

Several members including Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, Aleem Khan, Hamza Shehbaz Sharif, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Salman Rafique, Ayesha Chaudhry, Chaudhry Zaheerud Din, Bilal Yasin, Nadeem Kamran, Irfan Doltana, Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed, Manshaullah Butt, Murad Ras, Dr Mukhtar Bharat, Zakia Shahnawaz, Uzma Bukhari, Hina Pervaiz Butt, Bushra Anjum Butt and Sania Ashiq took oath.

However; estranged Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Chaudhry Nisar did not attend the session.

Election of the Chief Minister Punjab will be held on August 17.PTI has 175 members in the assembly, PML-Q 10, PML-N 162 and PPP 10. Rah-e-Haq party has one member while three independent members are present.

Earlier on Wednesday, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said that they are returning to Punjab Assembly after 14 years.

Talking to media ahead of assembly’s oath-taking session, Pervez Elahi assured to run the House in a better way.

He also expressed will to work jointly with opposition for the development of the province.

Black and blue ribbons during sessions are usual, he added.

Earlier, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Hamza Shahbaz announced to raise the issue of elections 2018 rigging on every platform.

Talking to mediamen outside Punjab Assembly ahead of oath-taking session, Hamza said that they will hold a protest against the rigging inside and outside the House.

Son of former Chief Minister of Punjab (CM) Shehbaz Sharif further assured to fulfil his constitutional duties after swearing-in. Sacrifices of ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif won’t go in vain, he added.
