LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly has passed a resolution calling for restrictions on social media use by children under the age of 16, citing concerns over their physical, mental and moral well-being.
The resolution was moved by government lawmaker Sarah Ahmed, who said protecting children from harmful influences was the responsibility of the state.
According to the resolution, exposure to inappropriate content on social media is placing children at risk of mental stress and other potential harms.
The resolution noted that countries including Australia, France and China, as well as several US states, have introduced laws and restrictions concerning social media access for minors.
It stressed that Pakistan also needed effective legislation to ensure a safer digital environment and protect the future of children.
The resolution called on the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to introduce an effective age-verification mechanism on social media platforms to prevent children below 16 from accessing the services.
The assembly urged relevant authorities to take necessary steps to implement safeguards aimed at protecting minors from harmful online content.
