LAHORE: The Punjab Environment Department has prohibited the burning of waste in open spaces across the province as part of efforts to reduce air pollution and combat smog.
Director General Environment Abdullah Nayyar Sheikh has directed authorities to take strict action against those violating the ban. The prohibition applies to the burning of rubbish on roads, streets, vacant plots, marketplaces and other open areas.
The restrictions also cover the burning of plastic, rubber, fallen leaves, bushes, green waste and other combustible materials.
The department has instructed district administrations, municipal authorities and relevant agencies to step up monitoring, identify areas where waste burning is common and ensure its timely collection and safe disposal.
According to the department, the strategy aims to tackle pollution at its source rather than respond after environmental damage has occurred.
Residents, businesses and institutions have been urged to follow approved waste collection and disposal procedures and refrain from burning rubbish in the open.
Abdullah Nayyar Sheikh warned that violations would not be tolerated and that immediate action would be taken against those found burning waste.
The initiative is part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to control smog, improve air quality and safeguard public health.
