KARACHI: Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has announced a temporary shutdown of gas supply to carry out repair work on its 24-inch Sher Shah mainline.
According to the company, the shutdown will start at 10pm on Saturday and continue until 9am on Sunday. SSGC cautioned that the affected areas could experience reduced gas pressure if the maintenance work takes longer than scheduled.
The areas likely to face disruptions include Baldia Town, Ittehad Town, Saeedabad, Naval Colony, Musharraf Colony and Mawach Goth.
Residents of several localities in Orangi Town, including Gulshan-e-Bahar, Gulshan-e-Zia, Sector 16 and Ghaziabad, may also experience low gas pressure. Altaf Nagar, Mehran City and Ramzan Goth are among the other potentially affected neighbourhoods, along with the SITE Industrial Area.
The company advised that gas pressure could remain affected in these locations if the shutdown period is extended.
Separately, Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik has directed the Board of Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) to formulate a comprehensive plan and sustainable business model to improve the company’s financial performance, with particular emphasis on reducing Unaccounted-for-Gas (UFG).
The minister issued the directives during a meeting in Karachi with the SSGCL board chairman, directors, managing director and senior officials to assess the company’s performance, operational difficulties, achievements and future reform priorities.
During the briefing, the managing director outlined the company’s progress and ongoing challenges. Officials reported improvements in the gas distribution network, including an approximately 57% reduction in UFG in volumetric terms.
The meeting was also informed that gas load-shedding had been avoided for K-Electric, industrial consumers and fertiliser plants, while domestic consumers were receiving gas three times daily.
