LAHORE: The Punjab Cabinet has rejected the decision to change the name of Gaddafi Stadium.
The 22nd meeting of the provincial cabinet was held under the chairmanship of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, during which various agenda points were discussed.
The cabinet has requested a policy for the establishment of e-vehicle charging stations and rejected the decision to change the name of Gaddafi Stadium.
It is worth noting that in 2022, the name of Karachi’s National Stadium was changed to the National Bank Cricket Arena.
Gaddafi Stadium, built in 1959, was originally named ‘Lahore Stadium.’ Later, in 1974, Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi attended the OIC summit in Lahore. During his visit, he delivered a speech supporting Pakistan’s right to acquire nuclear weapons. Following this, Pakistan’s then Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, decided to rename the stadium in honor of the Libyan president as ‘Gaddafi Stadium.’
