R4, European ministers call for diplomacy to ease regional tensions

WEB DESK: Foreign ministers from Türkiye, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia—the R4—met counterparts from France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom in Istanbul on Saturday, pledging to support diplomatic efforts for regional peace and stability.

A joint statement shared by Pakistan’s Foreign Office said the talks covered several regional and international issues, including the US-Israel-Iran conflict, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and prospects for a negotiated two-state solution. Ministers also discussed Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, freedom of navigation, and rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb and the Black Sea.

The ministers stressed the need to address conflicts through dialogue, diplomacy and de-escalation. They also called for lasting, negotiated settlements in line with relevant United Nations resolutions.

The countries agreed to continue meeting in this format to help prevent conflicts and advance peace and stability, the statement said.
