Saudi Arabia’s First Woman to Star in a Theatrical Play

Riyadh (February 12, 2018): Saudi Arabia is in a constant phase of transformation aimed at bringing about gender equality that allows women to occupy public spaces now, as opposed to in the past.

Owing to the recent streak of change, Najat Mouftah, a student of information technology, has become the country’s first woman to star in a theatrical play.Najat, defying all odds, took to the stage alongside men in a play called “The Emperor’s New Groove.”

She said, “I am happy to be the first actress to do this. However, I am not sure if there was an actress who preceded me, and was more happy to practice my hobby and talent on stage in a public show.”Najat further elaborated that she had taken active part in stage dramas in school. However, she had never imagined to be casted in a commercial play.

The exemplary woman said that she found unwavering support from her mother and the drama management team as she was performing,and that she will continue to pursue this line of work in the future also.The Emperor’s New Groove” was performed in 2017 for a total of four times. However, it was only recently that it was presented to the audiences with a female character for the first time.
