SC Dismisses Contempt Petitions Against Sharif Family

Islamabad (March 12, 2018): The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday dismissed contempt of court petitions against ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister of Punjab (CM) Shehbaz Sharif and son-in-law Captain (r) Safdar.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar conducted hearing on a petition filed by Mahmood Akhtar Naqvi.

The complainant said that Nawaz Sharif, after disqualification in Panama case, delivered speeches against Joint Investigation Team (JIT) which is unlawful over which the CJP said that the former PM used inappropriate words against JIT, not the court.“We have record of anti-judiciary speeches of Sharif family which will be raised on a suitable time, he added.

A similar contempt petition against the Sharif family was filed by Advocate Makhdoom Niaz Inqalabi in Islamabad High Court who pleaded with the court to ban the transmission of Nawaz Sharif’s speeches as he lashes out at judges in his public appearances and media talks.Another petition is filed against the ex-prime minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz in a case pertaining to anti-judiciary speeches in Lahore High Court.

Justice Shahid Kareem was conducting hearing on Amna Malik’s petition against the Sharif family during which, the plaintiff said that Nawaz and Maryam had once again criticized courts in Kot Mominabad rally.

Petitioner’s lawyer requested to ban broadcast of Nawaz and Maryam’s speeches. He continued that as per the Constitution, no one is allowed to say anything against judiciary and army.
