SC Rejects Contempt Petitions Against Nawaz, PM Abbasi

Islamabad (April 26, 2018): Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday disposed of contempt petitions against Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and his predecessor Nawaz Sharif.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, also declared the petitions against them ineffective and ordered to dismiss the cases.

The petitioner had pleaded the court that PM Abbasi spoke against the judiciary following the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif in Panamagate case.

To which, the chief justice remarked that Abbasi had given statement regarding ongoing corruption references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against members of Sharif family.

How a statement regarding NAB does references come under contempt of court, the top judge enquired. Therefore, the court dismissed the petitions.The Supreme Court on March 26 rejected a petition seeking initiation of contempt of court proceedings against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for out of turn promotion.

“Nawaz Sharif is now no more prime minister, therefore the plea against him become ineffective,” Chief Justices said in his remarks while giving the ruling over the petition.

A three-judge SC bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar dismissed the petition against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif regarding noncompliance of court’s orders in the out of turn promotion case.

Petitioner told the court in through his plea that Nawaz Sharif has given out of the turn promotion, on which chief justice remarked that what contempt of court did the Mian Sahib done?  On which petitioner told the court that after the court decision PM could not give shoulder promotion.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan commented that the case had become ineffective under the current circumstances.

The top court had dismissed similar petitions by the same person and Advocate Sheikhul Hasan earlier this month.
