102nd Birth Anniversary of Shakeel Badayuni Today

Web Desk (August 03, 2018): 102nd birth anniversary of Shakeel Badayuni, subcontinent’s renowned poet and songwriter is being observed today. Shakeel Badayuni’s songs still creates magic and are fresh to hear.

Shakeel Badayuni was born on August 3, 1916 in an Indian state Uttar Pradesh. His father arranged tuition of Arabic, Urdu, Persian, and Hindi for Shakeel at home, being reason for his expertise in these subjects.When he joined Aligarh Muslim University in 1936, he started participating in inter-college, inter-university ‘mushairas’ and won frequently. After completing his BA in 1940, he moved to Delhi as a supply officer, but continued participating in ‘mushairas’, earning fame nationwide. Shakeel moved to Bombay in 1944, to write songs for films.

He met film producer, A.R. Kardar and music composer, Naushad Ali, who asked him to sum up his poetic skills in one line and thus he wrote, ‘Hum Dard Ka Afsana Duniya Ko Suna Denge, Har Dil Main Mohabbat Ki Ek Aag Laga Dengey’. Naushad immediately retained him for Kardar’s 1947 release, Dard. The songs of Dard proved to be very successful. Shakeel deserved success which started with Dard and continued on over the years.He received Filmfare awards of best lyricist for three consecutive years, for his songs including ‘Chaudvin ka chand ho’ in film Chaudhvin Ka Chand released in 1961, ‘husnwale tera jawab nahin’ in film Gharana released in 1962 and  ‘kahin deep jale kahin dil’ in film Bees Saal Baad released in 1963.

His words were sang by some legendary singers including Muhammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mukesh, Shamshad Begum and Surraiyya.The Indian government had honoured him with the title Geet Kar-e-Azam. Poet, songwriter wrote over 100 songs and ghazals. Apart from songs, legend also published five of his poetic collections including ‘Firdous’, ‘Rangeeniyan’, ‘Sanam o Haram’ and others.

Shakeel Badayuni succumbed to diabetes complications at the age of fifty-three, on 20 April 1970, at Bombay Hospital leaving behind his wife, two sons and two daughters.
