KARACHI: The Sindh provincial administration has declared July 29 as a public holiday across the region in observance of the annual Urs of the revered Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.
A formal notification issued by the government states that this holiday will be observed in all provincial government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous organizations, corporations, and local councils under Sindh’s jurisdiction.
The notification reads: “The Government of Sindh designates the 14th of Safar 1448 AH / July 29, 2026 (Wednesday) as a public holiday throughout Sindh to commemorate the Urs of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. This applies to all government departments, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous entities, corporations, and local councils under the provincial government’s control.”
The Urs festivities commence annually on the 14th of Safar, the second month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and span three days. The upcoming Urs will feature poetry recitations, literary seminars, and various cultural events dedicated to celebrating the poetic legacy of the Sufi saint.
Throughout these days, devotees and admirers participate in a series of spiritual and cultural activities honoring Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s contributions to Sufi poetry and philosophy.
