ANKARA: Türkiye will not deploy troops to Yemen to fight the Houthis, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Thursday, despite Ankara’s defence agreement with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
The pact, signed in August, commits the three countries to support one another if attacked. Fidan stressed that it is defensive, not offensive, and said Türkiye would not send forces into another country to launch an attack.
Turkish and Saudi military officials will assess what defensive support may be needed, he said, without providing further details.
The agreement still requires ratification by Türkiye’s parliament. As renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have raised questions about whether the pact could pull its members into the conflict, Turkish officials have sought to play down that possibility.
