WEB DESK: Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, announced on Thursday that the United States will be the exclusive bidder for the 2031 Women’s World Cup. Additionally, the United Kingdom has been selected as the host for the 2035 tournament.
The United States is set to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup as the sole bidder, while the United Kingdom will host the tournament in 2035, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Thursday at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade.
Infantino stated that, the bid for 2031 was submitted by the USA, possibly in collaboration with other CONCACAF member nations. He also confirmed that the 2035 tournament would be hosted in Europe by the home nations, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which recently expressed interest in the event.
In addition to the host announcements, Infantino revealed plans to expand the Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48 teams starting with the 2031 tournament. This expansion aligns with FIFA’s efforts to enhance the tournament’s competitiveness and global reach.
Infantino’s remarks come after FIFA clarified that it would only accept bids for 2035 from European or African countries. The official selection of hosts will be determined at a FIFA Congress scheduled for the second quarter of 2026.
While South Africa and Morocco had initially shown interest in bidding as well, Infantino’s recent comments suggest they have been ruled out of contention. The next Women’s World Cup is scheduled to be held in Brazil in 2027.
