Voting Underway For Speaker, Dy Speaker in Sindh, KP Assemblies

Web Desk (August 15, 2018): Newly elected members of provincial assembly (MPAs) in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Wednesday have started secret balloting for selection of speakers and deputy speakers.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has nominated Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani for the slot of KP Assembly’s speaker and Mahmood Jaan for the slot of deputy speaker.Laiq Mohammad and Jamshed Mohammad have been nominated for the slot of speaker and deputy speaker respectively by the opposition.

In Sindh, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) nominated Agha Siraj Durrani for the slot of speaker and Rehana Leghari for the deputy speakers seat.

On the other hand, the joint opposition have nominated Javed Hanif and Rabia Azfar as a candidate for the slot of the speaker and deputy speaker’s slot respectively.Strict security measures have been taken today around Sindh Assembly building and the secretary SA cancelled all the passes.

Earlier today, as many as 360 Punjab Assembly newly elected members were administered oath by outgoing speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal during the first session of the assembly.

Several members namely, Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, Aleem Khan, Hamza Shehbaz Sharif, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Salman Rafique, Ayesha Chaudhry, Chaudhry Zaheerud Din, Bilal Yasin, Nadeem Kamran, Irfan Doltana, Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed, Manshaullah Butt, Murad Ras, Dr Mukhtar Bharat, Zakia Shahnawaz, Uzma Bukhari, Hina Pervaiz Butt, Bushra Anjum Butt and Sania Ashiq.

However; estranged Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Chaudhry Nisar did not attend the session. Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly will be chosen on August 16 through secret balloting. The nomination papers for the aforementioned slots will be submitted from 3pm to 5pm today.

PTI has nominated Chaudhry Pervez Elahi as the speaker and Dost Muhammad Mazari as deputy speaker. On the contrary, Chaudhry Iqbal Gujjar will run for speaker’s slot.

Election of the Chief Minister Punjab will be held on August 17.PTI has 175 members in the assembly, PML-Q 10, PML-N 162 and PPP10. Rah-e-Haq party has one member while three independent members are present.

Election results from three constituencies are pending while it has been halted from other three. Seven seats of Punjab Assembly were vacated after the member chose to take oath from National Assembly seat.
