GAZA: At least 10 people have lost their lives following an Israeli airstrike that ignited a fire at a school serving as a shelter for displaced persons in Gaza City. Among the deceased is a child who tragically perished in the flames.
The Palestinian Civil Defence reported that their emergency responders retrieved ten bodies early Wednesday morning after the assault on the school, which was hosting those forcibly displaced by the ongoing conflict. A significant number of injuries were also reported, as detailed in a post shared on the Telegram messaging platform.
“Children are being burned while they sleep in the tents of the displaced,” Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif expressed in a social media update following the attack.
He emphasized the perilous situation, stating, “There are no safe areas, and no survivors of this genocide. Gaza City and its northern regions have faced relentless Israeli shelling and artillery fire for hours.”
The civil defence unit issued an urgent plea for help from the International Committee of the Red Cross to assist in rescuing individuals trapped beneath the rubble of homes, following Israeli bombings in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood.
They noted that trapped residents are calling for assistance, but emergency workers are unable to reach the area due to its classification as a “no-go” zone by Israeli forces.
Reports from international media indicated that, a child was among two fatalities resulting from an Israeli attack on tent shelters in Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. Additionally, one person was reported dead, and several others were injured in an Israeli drone strike targeting tent shelters in the so-called al-Mawasi “safe zone” located south of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
Throughout the early hours of Wednesday, intense Israeli artillery fire and airstrikes were reported across various regions of the Strip.
