RIYADH: U.S President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday his intention to ease sanctions and move toward restoring diplomatic relations with Syria’s new government, viewing it as a step toward peace in the region.
During his speech at the Saudi-US Investment Forum in Riyadh, Trump stated, “There is a new government that will hopefully succeed,” referencing Syria’s recent political developments. He added, “I say good luck, Syria. Show us something special,” signaling cautious optimism.
The announcement follows discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, highlighting regional diplomatic efforts. Trump revealed that he is scheduled to meet with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa on Wednesday, a move that marks a notable shift given the longstanding U.S. stance.
Al-Sharaa was appointed president of Syria in January, shortly after insurgent groups, led by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), launched a significant offensive in Damascus, ending the Assad family’s 54-year rule. The United States has not yet officially recognized the new Syrian government, maintaining sanctions imposed under Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The White House confirmed that President Trump would “say hello” to President Al-Sharaa during his upcoming meeting in Saudi Arabia, signaling a potential thaw in relations.
