PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court has issued an order to prevent the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly from administering oaths on reserved seats.
According to detail, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTI-P) filed a petition in the Peshawar High Court regarding reserved seats. In their petition, PTI-P stated that their party has two members in the KP Assembly, but only one reserved seat for women has been allocated to them. They argued that they are entitled to more reserved seats.
Justice Syed Arshad Ali remarked that the petitioners should approach the Election Commission first, and then come back to the court. In response, the petitioner’s lawyer argued that once the notification is issued, there is no room for further adjustments.Justice Syed Arshad Ali inquired about the situation if the seats have already been allocated. The lawyer replied that the seats have been allocated, but the oath-taking of the members has not yet occurred. The Election Commission has distributed 19 reserved seats out of a total of 22.
Subsequently, the court directed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly to refrain from taking oaths on the reserved seats pending further orders.
