Former Sri Lankan Navy Chief arrested in kidnapping, disappearance case

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan authorities have detained former Navy Chief Admiral Nishantha Ulgama in connection with a 15-year-old kidnapping and disappearance case.

According to police, Ulgama was taken into custody in 2010 over the disappearance of a 48-year-old man, who was the head of the Navy’s Intelligence Directorate at the time.

A investigating officer told AFP, a foreign news agency, that after recording Ulgama’s statement, he was formally arrested and the court remanded him until Wednesday.

Admiral Nishantha Ulgama served as Sri Lanka’s 24th Navy Chief from 2020 to 2022. After his retirement in 2022, he also served as Sri Lanka’s ambassador to Cuba.
