PESHAWAR: The court issued a reserved verdict on petitions challenging the disqualification decisions of Shibli Faraz and Omar Ayub. It ordered the Election Commission to refrain from further proceedings against the petitioners and instructed that no further action be taken on the August 5 notification.
The ruling stated that the petitioners are convicted by the Anti-Terrorism Court in Faisalabad. The petitioners’ lawyer argued that they were not present in court at the time of the judgment and wish to appeal their sentences in Lahore High Court. The Election Commission, however, declared the petitioners disqualified without holding any hearings.
The court issued notices to the Election Commission and other parties, suspending the hearing until August 20.
It is noteworthy that following convictions in the May 9 cases, the Election Commission had yesterday disqualified nine members of Parliament, including PTI leaders Senator Shibli Faraz and MNA Omar Ayub, along with others.
