ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday passed the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2025, aimed at criminalizing the illegal eviction of women from their residences.
The bill Presented by PPP MNA Sharmila Faruqui, the legislation stipulates that any household member, including a husband, who forcibly expels a woman from her home without valid reason, could face imprisonment for three to six months and a fine of up to Rs200,000.
Under the proposed amendments, cases of unlawful eviction will be tried before a first-class magistrate, with the intent of strengthening legal safeguards for women against forced displacement under the Pakistan Penal Code. The deputy speaker referred the bill to the relevant committee for further review.
The legislation emphasizes that it addresses a crucial gap in protecting women’s rights within their own homes. “Many women in Pakistan are vulnerable to forced removal due to power imbalances and societal norms that favor male authority,” the bill states. It aims to reinforce women’s right to feel safe and secure in their living spaces. “Providing legal recourse will empower women to oppose domestic abuse and wrongful eviction without fear, fostering an environment rooted in dignity and equality,” the bill notes.
Furthermore, the bill underscores that this legal measure signifies a shift in societal mindset, challenging traditional gender roles and holding men accountable for their actions. Making unlawful eviction of a wife a criminal offense sends a strong message that such behavior is unacceptable and will be penalized.
The legislation also aims to raise awareness about women’s rights within families and communities, encouraging dialogue and empowerment. The potential penalties for offenders are expected to serve as a deterrent, helping to create safer, more respectful relationships and promoting gender equality
