KARACHI: Mufti Abdul Qavi has stated that the alcohol there is today is not the intoxicant mentioned as forbidden in the holy Quran and hence it is not forbidden.
Mufti Qavi stated that during his visit to Murree Brewery, he conducted thorough research and concluded that the alcohol produced there is not the intoxicant referred to as Khamr, which is forbidden in Islam. He explained that Khamr is the juice extracted from fruits, heated or buried, with evaporation leaving behind a substance that is not classified as alcohol in the traditional sense. He emphasized that modern alcohol, found in many Western beverages and even some homeopathic medicines containing 90-99% alcohol, does not fall under the category of forbidden intoxicants.
He further elaborated on the origins of Khamr, mentioning that before the invention of alcohol, fruit juices were processed through heating or fermentation, resulting in a residue that he equated with what is considered permissible. In his view, alcohol should be grouped with cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and similar substances, rather than being classified as a strictly forbidden intoxicant.
Regarding personal matters, Mathira asked Mufti Qavi about Rakhi Sawant and her recent proposals. He responded humorously, saying, “She has many women within her and possesses numerous qualities,” and added that when Rakhi Sawant embraced Islam, she expressed her desire to marry a Mufti from Pakistan. Qavi claimed to be the only man suitable for her according to her criteria.
He also claimed to have a happy married life under Pakistani law, mentioning that he has tied the knot with dozens of women from Morocco, India, and parts of Pakistan such as Chitral, Muzaffarabad, and Mirpur, seeking peace and tranquility from these marriages. He quoted a verse from the Holy Quran, implying that his marriages bring him spiritual fulfillment.
Qavi further stated that he is a landlord but does not spend his own money; instead, he receives gifts from women he married. Regarding the Hareem Shah controversy, he clarified that Hareem Shah did not slap him. Instead, Aisha, another woman present, gently placed her hand on his face, and Hareem Shah recorded a video of the moment. He claimed that Aisha’s husband later divorced her, unable to tolerate her actions.
On the subject of his removal from the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, Qavi said he resigned out of disgust after Yusuf Raza Gilani’s appointment of him, which he viewed as inappropriate. He also criticized a committee member who suggested that Qandeel Baloch should be included in the committee if Mufti Qavi was to be part of it. Qavi recounted that Qandeel Baloch had wanted to meet PTI chairman Imran Khan through him; she visited his hotel room, where he was about to take a shower. According to him, she placed his cap on her head, claiming she wanted blessings from it because she did not have her own scarf. He admitted that allegations about him not fasting during Ramadan, drinking Coke, and smoking cigarettes with Qandeel Baloch are true.
