ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced the suspension of the nomination process for opposition leadership positions in both the National Assembly and the Senate.
According to the party’s political committee, the nominations of Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Azam Swati for the roles of opposition leaders in the NA and Senate respectively have been put on hold. The committee stated that no new nominations would be considered until the appeals of Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz are resolved.
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja expressed the party’s support for current opposition figures and revealed that PTI’s founder, Imran Khan, has proposed alternative candidates for these positions. He added that the party hopes the courts will decide the ongoing disputes in PTI’s favor.
Sources indicate that internal disagreements within PTI have emerged over Imran Khan’s decision to nominate Mahmood Achakzai as the opposition leader in the National Assembly. Several party members reportedly raised concerns, arguing that other capable PTI members could assume the role.
Discussions within PTI’s political and parliamentary committees revealed mixed opinions—while some members questioned the decision, others emphasized respecting Imran Khan’s authority as the party’s founder, especially given his current incarceration.Previously, Imran Khan nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai for opposition leader in the NA, and Azam Swati for the same in the Senate, a move that has now been temporarily halted amid internal debates.
