Severe flooding alert in Punjab amid heavy rains, cross-border water discharges

LAHORE: Recent heavy monsoon rains and water releases from Indian dams have triggered catastrophic flooding across Punjab, particularly affecting rivers like the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab.

Authorities report widespread displacement, infrastructure damage, and rising water levels threatening urban and rural communities.

Key Developments:

Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala: Reached critical flood levels with inflow at 195,000 cusecs, causing extensive inundation in nearby villages and destruction of crops. Protective embankments breached, leading to flooding of large agricultural areas and displacement of thousands.Nullah Dek Collapse: The bridge connecting Narowal and Sialkot at Nullah Dek has been washed away by rising waters, with approximately 60,000 cusecs flowing through. A 50-year-old resident was swept away during the flood, prompting rescue operations.Evacuations and Displacements: Over 150,000 residents have been evacuated from flood-prone zones, including areas in Bahawalnagar, Kasur, Pakpattan, and others. Rescue teams continue efforts to move vulnerable populations to safer locations.

River Flow Status:

Ravi River: Medium to low flood levels detected, with inflow at Jasr reaching 115,000 cusecs, expected to rise further. Flood alerts issued for Shahdara and surrounding areas.Chenab River: Notable rise at Head Marala and Khanki Headworks, with flows approaching 90,000 cusecs, raising concerns about potential inundation.Indus River: Currently in low flood state but susceptible to flash floods, especially in hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan.Border Water Dynamics: Overflow from Indian dams, notably Thane dam in Jammu and Kashmir, has contributed to the rising flood levels.  Spillways may be opened at any moment to manage excess water.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued alerts for heavy rains and potential floods over the next 48 hours.Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has activated emergency protocols, with districts instructed to prepare for urban flooding in Lahore, Gujranwala, Jhang, and other divisions.
