ISLAMABAD: Delegation from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) conducted an official visit to Pakistan from August 24 to 28 to evaluate the country’s developments as an Associate Member of CERN, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday.
The visit involved a team of five leading CERN experts who engaged with the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) chairman and toured several key scientific and technological institutions across the country. These included prominent centers such as the National Centre for Physics (NCP), Heavy Mechanical Complex-3 (HMC-3), Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH), Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology (INMOL), and the National Institute for Laser and Optronics (NILOP), among others.
The main objective of the delegation’s tour was to evaluate Pakistan’s advancements in science and technology sectors, as outlined in an official press release.CERN, headquartered in Geneva, is recognized as the world’s premier research facility in particle physics and nuclear science. Founded by European nations on the principle of promoting “Science for Peace,” CERN has expanded into a global hub for scientific innovation, currently comprising 25 Member States and nine Associate Members, including Pakistan.
Pakistan officially became an Associate Member of CERN on July 31, 2015, and has since been actively involved in collaborative projects. The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) functions as the primary agency overseeing Pakistan’s partnership with CERN.The press release emphasized that Pakistan’s Associate Membership has yielded numerous benefits, including pushing the boundaries of scientific understanding, promoting technological progress, and nurturing a new generation of scientists and engineers.
