WASHINGTON: United States President Donald Trump suggested that India and Russia become “lost” to China following their recent meeting with Chinese President on Friday.
Xi Jinping, as Beijing advances its vision of a new global order. Trump expressed his view via a social media post, accompanied by a photo of Xi flanked by leaders from India and Russia at the summit in China.
In his post, Trump wrote, “It appears we’ve lost India and Russia to the deepest, darkest China. Wishing them a long and prosperous future together!”
When questioned about his statement, the Indian foreign ministry spokesperson in New Delhi declined to comment. Similarly, representatives from Beijing and Moscow were unavailable for immediate remarks regarding Trump’s comments on his Truth Social platform.
At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit held in Tianjin, Xi Jinping hosted over 20 leaders from non-Western countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Notably, Putin and Modi were seen holding hands as they approached Xi, and the three leaders later stood side by side.
India’s warming relations with China come amid a period of cooling US-India ties, driven by ongoing trade disagreements and strategic disputes. Earlier this week, Trump voiced disappointment with Putin, though he expressed no concern about the growing partnership between Russia and China.
