Why Rohit Sharma was removed as captain? Here’s the real reason

NEW DELHI: In October 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Shubman Gill would take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma as India’s One Day International (ODI) captain. During the team selection meeting held in New Delhi ahead of India’s upcoming tour of Australia, Ajit Agarkar the Chief selector disclosed the decision.

A media report has claimed that Gautam Gambhir played a role in the decision to replace ODI captain Rohit Sharma, as he wants to maintain tight control over the team. According to Indian media, Gambhir decided to sideline a prominent player like Sharma because the team management and selectors were concerned that if Rohit continued as captain, he might lead the team unilaterally, which could negatively impact the team culture.

On the decision to appoint Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, Chief Selector Ajit Agarwal stated that having separate captains for each format is intended to prevent conflicts among the team’s key players. He emphasized the importance of allowing Shubman Gill adequate time to prepare for the 2027 World Cup. It was recently decided to remove Rohit Sharma from the captaincy and appoint Shubman Gill as his successor.
