WEB DESK: Maria Corina Machado recognized for advocating democracy and human rights, awarded nobel peace price 2025.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless efforts to promote democratic governance and defend human rights in her country.
Machado, aged 58 and an industrial engineer by profession, is currently in hiding due to political persecution. She was barred from running for the presidency in 2024 by Venezuelan courts, preventing her from challenging incumbent President Nicolas Maduro, who has held power since 2013.
The Nobel Committee emphasized the importance of honoring individuals who stand up against authoritarian regimes, stating, “When authoritarian figures take control, it is vital to recognize the bravery of those who resist and fight for freedom.”
This year’s focus on Venezuela comes amid a backdrop of international speculation and controversy surrounding US President Donald Trump, who had publicly claimed he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump’s candidacy drew widespread attention after endorsements from countries including Pakistan, Israel, Cambodia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
However, experts and insiders predicted that Trump would unlikely secure the prize this year, citing his policies that have been perceived to undermine international stability and the global order cherished by the Nobel Committee.
The Nobel Peace Prize, valued at 11 million Swedish crowns (approximately $1.2 million), will be awarded in Oslo on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The Swedish industrialist established the awards in his will in 1895 to honor those who have made significant contributions to peace.
