ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been elected to serve on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026-2028 period, winning the support of a significant majority of UN member states and reaffirming its active role in promoting global human rights.
The election was held during the UN General Assembly session in New York on Tuesday. Thirteen other nations also secured seats on the Council, including Angola, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, India, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Slovenia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar shared the news via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing sincere thanks to the international community for their backing. “With Allah’s blessings, Pakistan has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council for 2026–28 with a decisive majority,” he stated.
In his message, Dar emphasized that Pakistan’s election is a testament to its commitment and contributions toward strengthening the global human rights framework. He also reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to collaborating with the international community based on principles of tolerance, respect, universality, consensus, and engagement, encapsulated by the acronym TRUCE.
The UN Human Rights Council, consisting of 47 member states, works to promote and safeguard human rights worldwide. Pakistan’s upcoming term will commence in January 2026 and run through the end of 2028, representing another step in its ongoing diplomatic efforts within international human rights forums.
