DUBAI: Pakistani residents enjoy some of the most affordable public transportation fares compared to many other countries.
According to a 2025 report by an Australian research organization that analyzed fare data across 123 nations and 319 cities, Pakistan has secured the position of the fifth most economical country for public transit. Iceland was identified as the most costly nation in the study.
The report highlighted that the average price of a single bus or metro ride in Iceland is approximately Rs1,365, with monthly passes costing around Rs22,660. Countries such as Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway are among the top ten most expensive places for public transport, alongside the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Finland.
On the flip side, Luxembourg emerged as the most affordable destination, offering free public transportation to its residents. Other low-cost countries include Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Syria, and Pakistan.
In Pakistan, the typical fare for a one-way journey stands at Rs46, with monthly transit passes costing roughly Rs1,800, the report states.
Experts noted that public transportation in Pakistan remains highly economical for daily commuters, whereas in many European nations, elevated fares place a greater financial burden on households.
