KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party marks its 58th Foundation Day on Sunday with district-level programmes across the country and a central gathering planned in Karachi’s Korangi area.
Founded in Lahore on November 30, 1967, the PPP emerged under the leadership of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who became its first chairman. The party’s rallying cry of “Roti, Kapra aur Makan” helped it win widespread public support, culminating in a sweeping victory across West Pakistan in the 1970 general elections.
Over nearly six decades, the PPP has navigated turbulent chapters, particularly during the regimes of Gen Ziaul Haq and Gen Pervez Musharraf. The party also claims several landmark accomplishments, including the passage of a unified constitution, laying the foundations of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, and advancing provincial autonomy.
Saeed Ghani, provincial minister and president of the PPP’s Karachi division, said the party opened the doors of politics to ordinary citizens. “Before the PPP, politics was dominated by feudal and business elites. We plan to celebrate this day with full enthusiasm,” he stated.
Karachi Mayor and Sindh government spokesperson Barrister Murtaza Wahab added that the PPP’s bond with the people has remained strong over the decades and will continue into the future.
Preparations for today’s Korangi rally are in full swing, with party flags decorating multiple neighbourhoods. Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, along with senior leaders from the centre and Sindh, is expected to address the main event.
