ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has officially approved the appointment of Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput as the new Chief Justice (CJ) of the Sindh High Court (SHC).
Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput was serving as the acting Chief Justice of the SHC prior to this appointment.Meanwhile, Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb has been appointed as a permanent judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification confirming his appointment. Prior to this, Justice Aurangzeb was acting as a judge of the Supreme Court.
Earlier, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) approved Justice Zafar Rajput’s elevation to the position of Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan and JCP Chairman Justice Yahya Afridi, to consider candidates for the top judicial role in Sindh.
Sources reveal that the commission reviewed the profiles of three senior judges before concluding on Justice Rajput’s appointment. This step aligns with the constitutional process, which mandates the JCP’s recommendation for appointments to the superior judiciary, followed by approval from the Parliamentary Committee.
Following the JCP’s endorsement, the appointment summary for Justice Zafar Rajput was forwarded to the President for final approval.
Profile of Justice Zafar Rajput
Born on October 16, 1965, in Hyderabad, Justice Rajput launched his legal career in 1990 as a subordinate court lawyer. He became an advocate of the Sindh High Court in 2001 and served as a judicial officer from 1993 to 2001.
After leaving judicial service, he practiced privately until his appointment as a judge of the Sindh High Court in August 2013.
