WEB DESK: At least 34 people lost their lives, and dozens more sustained injuries following airstrikes by Myanmar’s military on a hospital in the country’s western region on Wednesday night, according to local sources.
The hospital is situated in Mrauk-U town, Rakhine State, an area under the control of the Arakan Army, one of the most powerful ethnic armed groups opposing Myanmar’s military regime.
Since the military seized power through a coup in 2021, triggering a civil war, thousands have perished, and millions have been displaced across the country.
In recent months, the military has escalated airborne assaults in an effort to reclaim territories held by ethnic armed groups. They have also begun deploying paragliders to drop explosives on opposition targets.
The Myanmar military has not released any statement about the recent strike.
Khaing Thukha, a spokesperson for the Arakan Army, claimed that most of those killed were patients at the hospital. He described the attack as a brutal offense by what he referred to as the terrorist military targeting civilian areas and stated that the military must be held accountable for bombing civilians.
Earlier this year, over 20 people died when a military-operated paraglider dropped two bombs on a crowd gathered for a religious festival protest.
