Terrorism originating from Afghan soil poses a global threat: PM Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has raised concerns over an emerging wave of terrorism originating from Afghan soil, calling on the international community to urge Afghan authorities to fulfill their responsibilities in combating militancy.

Speaking at a forum in Ashgabat, commemorating Turkmenistan’s 30th anniversary of permanent neutrality, the prime minister expressed his privilege to visit the renowned city, distinguished by its white marble architecture and the warm hospitality of the Turkmen people.

He acknowledged Turkmenistan’s cordial welcome and praised the declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust, reaffirming the importance of global efforts toward unity.

During his address, Shehbaz Sharif underscored Pakistan’s active role within the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing that terrorism continues to pose significant challenges for the region. He stressed the need for collective international action to ensure Afghanistan does not allow its territory to be used for cross-border militancy.

He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution as a fundamental aspect of its foreign policy. Highlighting Pakistan’s involvement in supporting the Gaza Peace Plan endorsed by the UNSC, he noted that this initiative has provided essential relief to millions of Palestinians affected by the ongoing conflict.

Addressing broader global challenges like climate change and inequality, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of granting developing nations equitable access to advanced technologies. He commended Turkmenistan’s leadership in promoting peace on a global scale and advocated for meaningful steps to turn dialogue into practical outcomes.

The prime minister also urged world leaders to transcend divisive approaches and prioritize building connections that unite economies, societies, and ideas for a more collaborative future.
