Australian cricket great Damien Martyn ‘in induced coma’

WEB DESK: Former Australian cricket legend Damien Martyn has been hospitalized and placed in an induced coma, as reported by Australian media outlets.

The 54-year-old is reportedly battling meningitis, a serious and potentially life-threatening illness characterized by inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

According to reports from Wednesday, Martyn was admitted to the hospital on Boxing Day after experiencing a sudden and severe illness. Medical professionals later took the step of inducing a coma as part of his treatment protocol.

Meningitis, the condition Martyn is fighting, is known for its rapid onset and potentially fatal consequences without timely medical intervention.

An outpouring of support from the cricket fraternity

Messages of encouragement and solidarity have flooded in from the cricketing community. Former Australian wicketkeeper and close friend Adam Gilchrist reassured fans that Martyn is receiving top-quality care.

Darren Lehmann, former Australia coach and a longtime teammate of Martyn, also shared words of encouragement through social media. Lehmann posted his support on X, stating, “Lots of love and prayers… keep strong and fighting, legend. Love to the family.”

A stellar career remembered

Damien Martyn represented Australia in 67 Test matches between 1992 and 2006, amassing 13 centuries with an impressive batting average of 46.37. He also donned the Australian colors in 208 one-day internationals, cementing his legacy as one of the most elegant and technically gifted batsmen of his era.

A vital member of Steve Waugh’s formidable Australian team during its golden years, Martyn played a key role in some of the nation’s most iconic cricketing moments. Notably, he was part of Australia’s victorious campaign in the 2003 ODI World Cup, making a remarkable contribution in the final against India with an unbeaten 88, alongside Ricky Ponting.

Life beyond the boundary

After retiring from international cricket during the 2006 Ashes series, Martyn has largely remained away from public life. However, news of his illness has reignited public concern and rallied heartfelt support from fans and former teammates alike.
