PTA introduces MVNO policy, paving the way for advanced mobile services in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially rolled out a new policy framework for Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), a strategic move aimed at broadening access to modern and cost-effective mobile services nationwide.

Following approval from the federal cabinet, PTA announced that the new MVNO policy permits companies to offer mobile services without owning spectrum rights by collaborating with existing telecom operators. This initiative is designed to reduce entry hurdles, stimulate competition, and foster a more dynamic telecom industry.

The authority also revealed that licenses issued under this policy will initially be valid for a period of 15 years.PTA’s Vision for Increased Competition and InnovationThe PTA emphasizes that the introduction of MVNOs will serve to enhance competition, stimulate innovation, and give consumers more options for mobile connectivity. The licensing procedure for MVNOs is expected to commence shortly, with a draft of the licensing terms and conditions already available on the PTA’s official website for public consultation.Officials from PTA underline that their role extends beyond regulation to strategic oversight, ensuring fair operations by MVNOs while bolstering Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure. The authority also plans to closely oversee the deployment of MVNO services and enforce compliance with all relevant regulations.

Sources within the telecom sector regard this policy as a major milestone in modernizing Pakistan’s mobile communication landscape. By facilitating the entry of MVNOs, PTA anticipates improvements in service quality, affordability, and technological advancement across the country.
