LAHORE: The Punjab Provincial Assembly has passed a resolution condemning the ongoing and prolonged electricity load shedding across the region, with all members supporting the move unanimously. The resolution was introduced by government legislator Ahsan Raza and received unanimous approval during the session.
The statement highlighted concerns over unequal electricity billing, noting that some consumer groups are receiving relief while others continue to face outages. During the session, opposition member Rashid Tufail raised an issue regarding the absence of a quorum, prompting the chair to order ringing the bells for five minutes to restore order.
Electricity shortages have intensified, affecting not only Lahore but the entire Punjab province. Reports indicate that residents are experiencing power cuts of approximately one hour followed by an hour of supply. The shortfall faced by Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has surpassed 1,200 megawatts, while the national deficit now exceeds 4,000 megawatts.
Officials noted that daytime power shortages are somewhat alleviated due to solar energy, with around 7,000 megawatts generated from solar sources daily. However, the overall situation remains critical, with several power plants reporting decreased output. Experts warn that delays in the arrival of RLNG shipments could further deepen the gas shortage, potentially worsening the energy crisis across the country.
