Marking 30 years since the legendary Punjabi actor Sultan Rahi left us

WEB DESK: Three decades have passed since the iconic Sultan Rahi, celebrated as the voice of rural youth and revered as the “King of Art,” bid farewell to the world, leaving an everlasting legacy in Pakistani cinema.

A towering figure in Punjabi cinema during the 1980s and 1990s, Sultan Rahi dominated the film industry with over 700 appearances, 500 of which were lead roles—a feat that earned him a place in the Guinness World Records.

His cinematic journey began with a minor role in the film “Baghi”, but it was the massive success of the Punjabi blockbuster “Bashira” that elevated him to unparalleled stardom.

His legendary on-screen partnership with Mustafa Qureshi became a hallmark of box-office magic, with “Maula Jatt” breaking records and redefining the industry.

With over 150 film awards to his name, he commanded the screen alongside leading actresses of his era, including Asia, Anjuman, Saima, Gori, Neeli, and Babra Sharif.

Off-screen, Sultan Rahi was equally remarkable. A deeply spiritual man, he was steadfast in his faith, observing daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, and generously contributing to charitable causes.

He used his wealth to build mosques and assist in the marriages of orphaned girls, even going so far as to single-handedly reopen and clean a neglected mosque during a film shoot. His devotion extended to recording CDs of Quranic recitations and naats that were met with widespread admiration.

On January 9, 1996, tragedy struck when Sultan Rahi was murdered during a highway robbery on the Gujranwala bypass. Even after 30 years, justice remains elusive as his killer has not been apprehended.

Sultan Rahi’s contributions to cinema and his devotion to faith continue to inspire generations. His legacy endures, a testament to his powerful impact on Pakistan’s cultural and spiritual life—a true legend whose memory remains etched in the hearts of many.
